Removal of nitric oxide from simulated flue gas using aqueous persulfate with activation of ferrous ethylenediaminetetraacetate

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2023, Volume 17, Issue 4,   Pages 460-469 doi: 10.1007/s11705-022-2224-5

Abstract: Nitric oxide being a major gas pollutant has attracted much attention and various technologies have been developed to reduce NO emission to preserve the environment. Advanced persulfate oxidation technology is a workable and effective choice for wet flue gas denitrification due to its high efficiency and green advantages. However, NO absorption rate is limited and affected by mass transfer limitation of NO and aqueous persulfate in traditional reactors. In this study, a rotating packed bed (RPB) was employed as a gas–liquid absorption device to elevate the NO removal efficiency (ηNO) by aqueous persulfate ((NH4)2S2O8) activated by ferrous ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Fe2+-EDTA). The experimental results regarding the NO absorption were obtained by investigating the effect of various operating parameters on the removal efficiency of NO in RPB. Increasing the concentration of (NH4)2S2O8 and liquid–gas ratio could promoted the oxidation and absorption of NO while the ηNO decreased with the increase of the gas flow and NO concentration. In addition, improving the high gravity factor increased the ηNO and the total volumetric mass transfer coefficient (KGα) which raise the ηNO up to more than 75% under the investigated system. These observations proved that the RPB can enhance the gas–liquid mass transfer process in NO absorption. The correlation formula between KGα and the influencing factors was determined by regression calculation, which is used to guide the industrial scale-up application of the system in NO removal. The presence of O2 also had a negative effect on the NO removal process and through electron spin resonance spectrometer detection and product analysis, it was revealed that Fe2+-EDTA activated (NH4)2S2O8 to produce •SO4, •OH and •O2, played a leading role in the oxidation of NO, to produce NO3 as the final product. The obtained results demonstrated a good applicable potential of RPB/PS/Fe2+-EDTA in the removal of NO from flue gases.

Effectiveness of aerobic pretreatment of municipal solid waste for accelerating biogas generation during simulated

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 3, doi: 10.1007/s11783-018-1031-1

Abstract: This study evaluates the effectiveness of aerobic pretreatment of municipal solid waste (MSW) on reducing lag phase and accelerating biogas generation. Aerobic pretreatment degree (APD) was determined on the basis of reduction in volatile solids (VS) on a wet weight basis. In this study, intermittent aeration (IA) was applied to three reactors as a main aeration mode; since a single reactor was operated under continuous aeration mode. However, the purpose of the experiment was to reduce VS content of waste, irrespective of the comparison between aeration modes. Fresh MSW was first pretreated aerobically with different aeration rates (10, 40, 60 and 85 L/min/m ) for the period of 30–50 days, resulting in VS-loss equivalent to 20%, 27%, 38% and 53% on w/w basis for the wastes A1, A2, A3 and A4, respectively. The cumulative biogas production, calculated based on the modified Gompertz model were 384, 195, 353, 215, and 114 L/kg VS for the wastes A0, A1, A2, A3 and A4, respectively. Untreated waste (A0) showed a long lag phase; whereas the lag phases of pretreated MSW were reduced by more than 90%. Aerobically pretreated wastes reached stable methanogenic phase within 41 days compared to 418 days for untreated waste. The waste mass decreased by about 8% to 27% compared to untreated MSW, indicative that even more MSW could be placed in the same landfill. The study confirmed the effectiveness of aerobic pretreatment of MSW prior to landfilling on reducing lag phase and accelerating biogas generation.

Abstract: At present, is a crucial method for obtaining effective domain knowledge from massive heterogeneous networks. For most current focused crawling technologies, there are some difficulties in obtaining high-quality crawling results. The main difficulties are the establishment of topic benchmark models, the assessment of topic relevance of hyperlinks, and the design of crawling strategies. In this paper, we use domain to build a topic benchmark model for a specific topic, and propose a novel multiple-filtering strategy based on local and global (MFSLG). A comprehensive method (CPEM) based on the web text and link structure is introduced to improve the computation precision of topic relevance for unvisited hyperlinks, and a (SA) method is used to avoid the falling into local optima of the search. By incorporating SA into the with MFSLG and CPEM for the first time, two novel strategies based on and SA (FCOSA), including FCOSA with only global (FCOSA_G) and FCOSA with both local and global (FCOSA_LG), are proposed to obtain topic-relevant webpages about s from the network. Experimental results show that the proposed crawlers outperform the other focused crawling strategies on different performance metric indices.
